Mollie Victor - Power Unit Assembly, Hydraulics

What is your name and job role; describe your everyday activities, what do you typically do in a day and how long have you been in the industry for?

My name is Mollie Victor and I am a Hydraulic Multi-skilled Fitter who has worked for Bosch Rexroth for five years now. My typical day-to-day role consists of building and testing a variety of hydraulic power units.

What was the most interesting project you have ever worked on?

I would say that the best power unit I have worked on so far was for a well-renowned car manufacturing company. This is because it was so rewarding to see a project that I was heavily involved with look amazing upon completion, and it being for such a huge company. Another power unit I worked on was for a global provider of marine foundation solutions, in which I built most of the pipe work inside the unit. Knowing that my hard work is going out to be used in big, offshore industries is a huge achievement.

What were some key challenges that you faced recently, and how did you overcome them?

The key challenge for most of the builds is factoring in delays and having to meet tight deadlines. Things can always go wrong in the engineering world. It is learning, adapting and overcoming these problems which is the real ‘engineering skill’. The power unit I worked on for the aforementioned car manufacturer is used to run a hydraulic testing line for parts of the cars. We were briefed to build a unit that could fit in a tiny room, and we accomplished this. We achieved maximum efficiency for the need provided, not only literally, but also with the system running which brings many key benefits to hydraulics in the world of automotive.

What were some of your personal highlights of the project?

The future is always exciting, whether it is developing power units or trying out other areas of the business. From a practical point of view, I can’t wait to see how Bosch Rexroth can offer further help and provision for even bigger industrial companies.

What are you most excited about in terms of upcoming innovations/technical progress?

As I am only young, I can only speak about what I know now and from what I have seen and heard. Working on the shop floor with more experienced people, I have learnt a lot of different ways to overcome problems, and I’ve seen how the efficiency of hydraulic systems has improved over the years. Learning from the older generation has definitely helped me a lot in developing my career.

What sets Bosch Rexroth apart from competitors is the fact that we provide a service to satisfy the customer. We create bespoke power units to meet all the criteria within an acceptable time frame, whilst still creating a quality product.

What advice would you give to young people interested in working in hydraulics today?

The advice I would give is as simple as this - go for it! Doing something out of your comfort zone does not only help you to grow as a person, but also shows that you are quite able to do anything you set your mind to. In the modern world, that goes a long way!
